Research Impact
The BAD has invested nearly £9.2 million in research over the past 10 years. See our infographic below for more details of this breakdown.
One of our key objectives is to influence and foster collaborative skin research for the benefit of all. As a result, we developed our first multi-stakeholder research strategy day and published our research strategy but the BAD has been fostering and influencing skin research for over 10 years.
We are not a funding body, but we have committed considerable resource and funding in the past and over the next three years.
What we do
We invest directly through our various research work streams, staff time, infrastructure support for our registries, bursaries and fellowships. We also support external bodies working in skin research such as the British Skin Foundation (BSF), UK Dermatology Clinical Trials Network (UK DCTN) and Psoriasis Stratification to Optimise Relevant Therapy (PSORT) – all whom share our vision to support research to improve our patients’ lives.
We currently work on two very successful patient registries: BADBIR for psoriasis and A-STAR UK for atopic dermatitis. Both these registries monitor the long-term safety and effectiveness of the drugs licenced by NICE. We are working to support UKKCC’s vision to develop a biobank for keratinocyte cancers to collect fresh and frozen tumour samples for analyses, which in turn will help improve patient outcomes.
How we are building capacity
We have trainees embedded within most of our research committees to gain experience first-hand in research projects. We have also recently published our research resources link to help sign post anyone interested in getting into dermatology research what courses or where to gain practical experience: Dermatology Research Resources – British Association of Dermatologists (bad.org.uk). We facilitate and support several research courses such as the Research Techniques course, the BAD Research Course: BSID/ UKDCTN/ . We also support the Wellcome Trust Genomic course for Dermatologists.
We have been funding MRC/BAD/BSF joint fellowship award and the BAD/NIHR award for the past 10 years.
Funding research is only part of the story, and our plan is to publish a broader impact report about how the research work done by our members helps improve patient outcomes and demonstrate the impact of dermatology research.
