Publication

In this section are two sets of resources. The first is a list of training resources designed to help you gain a greater understanding of the publication processes, and how to critique research findings. The second is a list of possible ways to gain practical experience in different aspects of publication.

Publication of research findings ensures that your research builds on the existing knowledge, that it expands the field, that your findings reach the largest relevant audiences, is reproducible and helps improve patient outcomes.

Publication Training Resources

Nottingham University Centre of Evidence Based Dermatology course

The Centre of Evidence Based Dermatology offer an interactive online course in the systematic use of the literature retrieval tool PubMed.

The National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR) information

The NIHR provide helpful information for when planning dissemination of your research findings.

Cambridge University Libraries courses

The Cambridge University Libraries run short courses designed to take you through academic writing and publication for University and the NHS.

The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) guidance

The ICMJE provides guidance for authors, editors and reviewers on various aspects of authorship. It also offers recommendations on reporting, publishing of research and other useful resources.

The Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidance

COPE provides information about how to manage ethics in publishing, and organises webinars, courses and seminars on these topics.

Dermatology Training: The Essentials 

 This BAD publication includes how to strengthen academic expertise, and how to get involved in research, publishing and writing.

The Equator Network Reporting Guidelines

The equator network provides a comprehensive database of reporting guidelines and links to resources relevant to reporting research, for example STROBE for reporting randomised trials, and COREQ for reporting qualitative findings.

The British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) Journals

The BAD owns three high-quality journals that you may wish to consider: British Journal of Dermatology (BJD), Clinical & Experimental Dermatology (CED) and Skin Health & Disease (SHD).

The UK Dermatology Clinical Trials Network (UK DCTN) journal club

The UK DCTN run a virtual journal club organised by the SpRs to discuss journal articles, which helps hone critical appraisal skills.
