Clinical Trials

In this section are two sets of resources for clinical trials. The first is a list of training courses to learn about clinical trials, and the second is a list of possible ways to gain practical experience in clinical trials.

Clinical trials are research studies that test a surgical, medical or behavioural intervention in people. There are many different types, designs and phases of clinical trials, but in general they are undertaken to determine if a treatment/prevention strategy or medical device is safe and effective.

The Better Evaluation of Evidence and Statistics (BEES) Course

This BCD accredited course is provided by the Centre of Evidence Based Dermatology, Nottingham University, and aims to improve the ability to design and participate in clinical research.

The BAD research course: THESIS / BSID / UKDCTN

The course is designed for clinical trainees and promotes opportunities across the breadth of dermatology research. The next course will be in 2025.

The Skin Forum runs events to advance skin research through knowledge and information exchange.

European Academy of Dermatology & Venereology courses

The EADV offer a range of dermatology courses, including research workshops, clinical research and data management.

Global clinical trials database

A database of global clinical studies is a resource for researchers to stay up to date with research developments, find collaborators, and identify gaps.

Resources For Practical Experience in Clinical Trials

The UK Dermatology Clinical Trials Network (UK DCTN)

This is a collaborative network offering a range of support to researchers to help them develop their clinical trial ideas into fundable research proposals, and also offers annual educational Fellowships for a range of clinical staff.

The NIHR Associate Principal Investigator (PI) Scheme

The Associate PI Scheme is a six month in-work training opportunity, providing practical experience for healthcare professionals to work on and deliver a NIHR portfolio trial under the mentorship of Local PI.

Opportunities within the British Association of Dermatologist (BAD)

Involvement in BAD registries (e.g. BADBIR/A-STAR) could be a way to gain insight into population health research, by joining the register Steering Committee or requesting to use data for research.

Funding opportunities

The BAD website has information about a variety of research funding opportunities.

Skin Forum ECR Fellowship programme

This programme is to establish new collaborations and promote professional and personal development for early career researchers.
