Basic Lab

In this section are two sets of resources for basic lab work. The first is a list of training courses to learn more about basic lab work, and the second is a list of possible ways to gain practical experience.

Basic lab research can include constructing and testing a hypothesis, accurately manipulating experiments and recording outcomes.

Basic Lab Training Resources

Research Techniques Course

The British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) runs a lab-based ‘Research Techniques course’ every two years. This is usually based at one of the teaching labs in and around the UK and is a hands-on two-day introductory course. The next course will be in 2026

Skin Forum

The Skin Forum offers events to advance skin research through knowledge and information exchange.

European Academy of Dermatology & Venereology

The EADV offer a range of dermatology courses, including research workshops, clinical research and data management.

Resources for Practical Experience in Basic Lab

The British Society for Investigative Dermatology experience for undergraduates

The BSID offers undergraduate students skin research experience.

The British Society for Investigative Dermatology Travel Bursaries and Awards

BSID members receive reduced registration rates for the annual meeting. Members are also eligible to apply for a number of prizes/travel awards.

Skin Forum ECR Fellowship programme

The Skin Forum ECR fellowship programme is to establish new collaborations and promote professional and personal development for early career researchers.

Wellcome Connecting Science courses

Wellcome Connecting Science offers a range of courses, including an introductory ‘Genomics for Dermatology’ course run every two years.

Specialised Foundation Programme (SFP)

Specialised Foundation Programme (SFP) provides an opportunity for foundation doctors to develop research, teaching and leadership skills.

Academic Clinical Fellowships (ACFs)

Academic Clinical Fellowships are clinical training posts incorporating academic training.

The Francis Crick Institute: Development and Stem Cells Interest Group

The Development and Stem Cells Interest Group at the Francis Crick Institute offers a range of seminars and events.

London Skin Club

The London Skin club promotes dissemination, collaboration, and the exchange of ideas on topic of skin research.

The Barts Centre for Squamous Cancer

This is a research interest group at Barts Centre for Squamous Cancer.
