These guidelines should be studied carefully by the applicant, their proposer and seconder before the application form is completed.

Background

The BAD was formed in 1920 and is a professional body of international dermatologists and has a membership of over 1000.

The main objectives of the BAD are to promote for the public benefit, the knowledge and teaching of Dermatology and in furtherance of the above object but not otherwise:

To stimulate and promote appropriate medical and scientific research and to publish the results of such research.

  • To collect, collate and publish information and to hold conferences, meetings and seminars for the purpose of promoting such object.
  • To publish and disseminate a Journal called the British Journal of Dermatology for the purpose of promoting such object.
  • To relieve distress by promoting improvements in dermatological care.
  • To advise government, political parties and professional bodies on dermatology.
  • To do any and all acts and things which may be necessary, useful, suitable and proper for the furtherance, accomplishment or attainment of the object hereof.

Membership

There are eight categories of membership.

Membership Applications

All applications have to be supported by an existing Ordinary or Honorary members and seconded by an existing ordinary or honorary member of the Association. All applications must be returned together with a CV, a list of publications, a passport size photograph and a biographical detail form.

Applications are considered by the Executive Committee and applicants will be notified shortly after the Executive Meeting. Application forms should be submitted not less than six weeks before the Executive Committee is due to meet. Forms received after this date will be submitted to the following Executive meeting. Executive meetings are held quarterly on the third Thursday in January, April, July and October.

Subscription: Please do not enclose any money with this application. Membership applications are processed and full details sent once an applicant has been elected for membership by the Executive and the subscription has been received.

Trainee Membership

Trainee membership shall be open to all Trainees in dermatology in the United Kingdom and Ireland, holding a National Training Number. When a Trainee members is appointed to a consultant post or equivalent in the United Kingdom or Ireland he/she will automatically become an Ordinary member and must notify the Honorary Secretary. Any trainee member who does not become a Consultant Dermatologist in the United Kingdom and Ireland but who works elsewhere or in another capacity should notify the Honorary Secretary who will report to the Executive Committee. The latter will decide to which category of membership, if any, the member shall belong.

Ordinary Membership

An Ordinary member shall be a practising dermatologist on the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council whose work is substantially devoted to dermatological practice or research.

Retired Membership

Ordinary and Overseas members who retire from NHS practice, whether by reason of age, disability or ill health, are eligible to become retired members upon application. No subscription fee is payable if the journal is not required.

Overseas Membership

Overseas membership is available to dermatologist in practice outside the United Kingdom and Ireland. Nominations should be supported by citations from two Ordinary or Honorary members.

Honorary Membership

Honorary members shall be elected for outstanding eminence or service to the Association. Nominations should be accompanied by a citation and summary of his/her publications or contributions to dermatology.

Honorary Overseas Membership

Honorary Overseas members shall be persons of distinction who have contributed to the advancement of dermatology in the international field and who are not normally resident in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Nominations should be accompanied by a citation and a summary of his / her publications or contributions to dermatology.

Associate Membership

An Associate member shall be a medical practitioner with a major interest in dermatology and who is not on the Specialist register of the General Medical Council. Associate membership does not imply specialist knowledge and skills in dermatology. If the number of clinical sessions should change please notify the Honorary Secretary.

Associate Trainee Membership

Associate Trainee membership shall be open to trainees or research fellows in dermatology in the United Kingdom and Ireland, whoa re members of the Royal College of Physicians but do not yet hold a National Training Number. If an Associate Trainee is awarded a National Training Number he / she will automatically become a Trainee member and must notify the Honorary Secretary.

Membership Privileges

Membership privileges include:

  • A quarterly newsletter and events diary
  • A list of available fellowships
  • Monthly issue of the British Journal of Dermatology *
  • Reduced registration fee at the Annual Scientific Meeting
  • Entitlement to attend all other meetings and activities of the Association
  • BAD Handbook
  • Use of the Willan Library and Thesis Library
  • Discounted hire of rooms at 4 Fitzroy Square
  • Use of members rooms at Fitzroy Square

Members are entitled to view the books in the Willan Library at the Royal College of Physicians which house titles by distinguished dermatologists. These can be viewed by arrangement with the BAD. Copies of member's theses are kept in the committee room at the BAD and these can be viewed by arrangement.

New members are reminded that the first initial subscription should be paid by cheque and thereafter by direct debit. If joining after 1st July and back copies of the BJD are not required, a reduced subscription is available upon application.

Please note all membership will cease where subscriptions remain unpaid as at 31st March in any year.

UK members are kindly requested to pay subscriptions by direct debit. The annual subscription will therefore be automatically debited from your account on the 1st January each year and no further action is necessary.

Methods of Payment

1. Direct debit, on the appropriate form (UK members only)

2. Cheque in pounds sterling drawn on a UK bank. We no longer accept foreign cheques.

3. Bank to bank transfer in pounds sterling.

4. By creditcard (MasterCard or Visa)

All payments should be payable to the British Association of Dermatologists. Please print name and number (if known) on the reverse of the cheque or if paying by method 3 please send a copy of the bank draft or transfer to the BAD clearly indicating membership name and number (if known).
