Function

The British Epidermo-Epidemiology Society is a multi-disciplinary group that was formed in 1990 with the aim of stimulating and promoting high scientific standards of research into the epidemiology of skin disease and to facilitate publishing the results of such research. In addition to traditional descriptive epidemiology, the group's remit also includes health services research as applied to dermatology and intervention studies such as clinical trials. The group represents a "half way house" between dermatologists and epidemiologists, public health physicians, social scientists and statisticians.

There is an emphasis on discussing methodological problems openly and for sounding out preliminary results during the annual meeting. Many overseas members come to the BEES meetings and current membership stands at over 100. A formal constitution for BEES was agreed upon in January 1995 and an Executive Committee, chaired by Professor Hywel Williams, is now in place. BEES is also a registered charity and an affiliated group of the BAD. There is a warm welcome for all those interested in epidemiology and health services research as applied to dermatology to join BEES and to come to our meetings.

Meetings

Annual Meetings usually consist of six invited speakers and six free communications, the abstracts of which are published in the BJD. The last meeting was held in Cardiff on Wednesday 2nd March 2005. The next meeting will be held on Thursday 30th March 2006 at St Andrew's University, Dundee.

Course

The next BEES course aimed at teaching critical apparisal skills to dermatology trainees will be held at the University of Nottingham on 1-3 February 2006.
